By Jan 2026, the care economy accounted for over 4.5M jobs, 21.6% of all jobs. It just keeps getting bigger. Cuz: demographics. We're getting older. We have to work more to put/keep a roof over our heads. Care for the young, the old, and the too sick to work increasingly paid, not unpaid.

Tons of stories in these data. The most striking: utter silence about the one sector that just keeps growing...and remains in crisis. Yes, we are amidst a polycrisis. Yes, boy jobs are in big trouble. But ignoring how to strengthen what we totally control, in economic and human terms, is nuts to me.

Coming back to this story, the care economy has been driving the Canadian job market since the pandemic, but especially 2024-2025, despite the clampdown on international study permits. It's quite something that this sector is not part of the Canada Strong industrial strategy.

I’m finding it painful to watch CBC platform mostly conservatives to gush praise at former Prime Minister Stephen Harper (they’re releasing his archival collection) with almost zero commentary about the awful things he did while in power & around the world since.
