The male inmates with whom we spoke don’t want to leave. They like the fact that they can get day passes to visit the library, or work downtown. They like the access to LRT. They like being to step outside to work in the garden, practice Indigenous ceremony, or just enjoy the river valley view.

Why the shift? The Edmonton Institution for Women is overcrowded, and needs more space for higher risk medium security inmates. So 30 minimum security female inmates will move here. How will it work?

Over the next few weeks and months, the men will all be moved out of Grierson - transferred to other minimum or medium security institutions, to healing lodges, or in some cases, released. Then, after a few retrofit renos, Grierson will become a facility for 30 female prisoners. #yegdt
