What you see isn’t random: the striped look in the dust storm is caused by atmospheric gravity waves. As winds push dust-laden air over terrain or through layers of differing temperature and pressure, the air oscillates like ripples on water. #Dust marks these waves, creating visible parallel bands.

The Cantarell #oil🛢 field is not as big as before, but we still see smoke from it. The #smoke🏭 comes from burning extra gas (flaring) or small #fires on platforms. This process puts CO₂, methane, and soot into the air, which adds to local pollution and also makes global warming worse.🌡🌎

🧪🛰️ Aerosol Index is a parameter useful for detecting in satellite images the extent of smoke and dust events. It requires a sensor with UV channels like TROPOMI (shown). Easy to compute but it does have false (red circles) and true positives (green) and requires trained eye to tell the difference.

Last year’s widespread smoke followed an El Niño-driven hot, dry season and huge fires; this year fires exist but cooler/wetter conditions and different burn patterns mean less large-scale smoke buildup — plus some smoke is crossing from Africa. 🧵👇
