🧪🛰️🌍 This 12 hr animation of huge dust cloud illustrates something important. The initial impression is that change in dust brightness is due to changes in concentration (like dilution/deposition). In fact the culprit is a peculiar property where dust reflects +/- light depending on the 🌞 angle. 1/2

A largely under monitored area because satellite algorithms have a real hard time detecting these hazes (cirrus & sunglint) and get a realistic picture of how much is there. From the ground, the lidar profile from GSFC shows a low altitude haze (present already for +24hrs) and a clear elevated layer arriving at ~18:30UTC(14:30local) consistent with GOES image (with what I see in my window now)

The NSF-funded Arctic Research Consortium of the United States (ARCUS) will shut down at the end of Sept. ARCUS has been around since the late 80s; in recent years their staff had dwindled, and NSF said earlier this year that their grant would not be renewed. Another blow to polar science.
