🧵 Public science in the US has taken some heavy hits over the last year, but the White House OMB is proposing a series of changes that will result in a TKO for science as we know it unless we fight back. Here's what's happening, and why it matters. 1/n

Science is for everyone! You don't have to be an expert; don't worry about finding the right words. Just speak from the heart. And if you feel despair, remember why we fight. The trees, the birds, the axolotls, the musk ox, the air and the water; they don't get a say. So we have to speak for them.

Write an op ed urging your Congresspeople to stand up for public science and oppose the OMB's proposed rule changes. An effective letter might cite the ways publicly funded research has benefitted your community; your state university news page can tell you what they've been up to if you're stuck.

Because much of what the OMB is proposing is illegal, Congress needs to know about it. Yes, even the conservative ones you think don't care-- they know how much their states benefit from federal science funding, and I promise you, they do in fact care. Contact them!

If you are a member of a scientific or educational society, please contact them and ask them what they are doing to fight this. They should be releasing statements, calls to action, explainers, talking points, or drafting letters for their members to sign.

Now, for the "good" news: these are still proposed changes! They have not yet gone into effect. The public comment period is now open, and will run through July 13. You can file a comment about this proposed rule changes here: www.regulations.gov/document/OMB...
