City: We unanimously declare a climate emergency! We must make change no matter what the cost, humanity's survival depends on it! Community: Can we put in a protected bike lane to get more people cycling. City: No, we'll lose parking spots.

These won't work. But we'll be gaslit into thinking they do. Also: why not 40 km/hr at all times?

Randomly, the two times I've ever been in Madrid were both on Black Friday, on consecutive years before and after they did the big pedestrian friendly redesign of Gran Via. Packed both years but was a huge difference in how pleasant it was to be there.

is having a popup downtown at Tiff and I had some gift cards so I picked up a 4k of Eyes Wide Shut. This looks insane. I saw this opening night in (good lord) 1999 - see ticket stub. I can't explain what this feels like seeing it again with such clarity.

Toronto deliberately killed apartment construction in the early 1970s, after a generation-long building boom. Almost all of that housing was built by “the market.”

you see this happen a lot in "streetwear." people who co-opt a streetwear aesthetic frozen in time while making cities more hostile to the people who gave that aesthetic meaning — less affordable housing, more crackdown on noise, more policing, etc.

I remember watching the Jays play the world series with my Grandparents in the 90s. Sure we had ads, but that's just part of free tv. Now I have to pay $30+ a month to watch and I still have to watch ads. Plus my grandparents have been dead for years! Everything is worse, now.

who creates the lively art and music scenes if the rent is too high? who makes cultural life? who serves you food or washes your dishes? who creates the fancy little restaurants that draw you to urban living? affordable housing is at the heart of what makes city life worthwhile.

I bet that if the Leafs playing for the cup the city wouldn’t be as energized as they are toward the Jays. I think that’s because at some point almost everyone in Toronto has been at the Skydome for a game. Only a few people I know have been to a Leafs game.
