Yesterday I visited a Lancashire school who hosted a Year 10 Maths-History-Shakespeare day. It included quizzes, a talk and a 45 minute team DT challenge to build a cardboard replica of The Globe. Ever since the move to polypad.amplify.com the tool has been broken for me. On Firefox, the grids don't even appear. On Chrome, they appear but don't match the default block shapes in the Number domain (where you can't change the sizes) AND it wouldn't save. I'm just lamenting. 😿 #iTeachMath

3²/4²/5² is the perfect day for arguing about best proofs of the Pythagorean theorem. An incredible thing about Euclid's proof is that it applies to the area of *any* similar figures drawn on the sides of a right triangle. 🧮

This one is a bit sad, but human rights don't tend to be enforced as much as legal rights or responsibilities, especially at the local level. Imagine if those steely HOA associations had "math classes, circles, and festivals for every kid living here" in their rules! 🤔

Toddlers can treat multiplication as algebraic without a worry in the world via age-appropriate play and metaphors. Then they grow out of that ability, much like an eight-year-old won't be quite native in a new language. Then it's relatively hard work for older learners to grok "4 x Y for any Y."

While editing, I often replace "best" (and similar) with "better," which instantly sounds more inviting. Everyone can work on doing better and better in their own ways. Meanwhile, there can only be one "best": artificial scarcity. It's fine in some settings, e.g., no-stakes play and games, but...
