This work 'Industrial Skyline at Night,' by Sylvia Gosse was made in 1909 the year she began attending Walter Sickert's evening classes at the Westminster School of Art. The following year she started teaching at the Sickert and Gosse School of Painting and Etching.

Yes to all the above. 🙂 The river absolutely is the natural boundary: 'Mersey' is from the Old English for boundary. The Ferry Tavern is great, and the 'island' is Cuerdley Marsh, where the power station had its settling lagoons - another world from even the landward side thereabouts.

Isn’t there a great pub on the river, really close?

I seem to remember that as you went along the river past Fiddler’s Ferry there was an island - beyond the power station fences - full of the best blackberry bushes you could ever imagine. Completely out of reach.

(The Mersey seems like the natural boundary. I love that they still have the old historical marker on the road between Stretford and Sale.)

When we first lived in Chorlton I used to head west on my bike along the Mersey. Amazing how quickly you get there. Then Spike Island. Then Liverpool Airport. (As someone who grew up seeing the power station from Rivington {from where it seemed a million miles away} that was amazing).

Lovely pic of a sub regional icon. It is a sadder, asymmetrical, sight with four of its cooling towers gone. Historically South Lancashire, of course; whilst Cheshire is a fine county, the decision it should cross the river to seize two bridgeheads on the Lancs bank was unnecessary and daft.
