Flagella can be assembled by IFT without the canonical heterotrimeric kinesin! Grab a cup of tea or coffee and follow a story that started 25 years ago

Solving 25 years of frustration, Daniel Abbühl managed to tag trypanosome tubulin and to express it in an inducible manner, hence revealing flagellum assembly! A tour-de-force! Preprint here:

We propose a model where the new flagellum grows in a linear manner while the old one is locked but shrinks slightly, hence requiring unlocking and compensation after cell division, leading to such multicoloured flagella following induction/deinduction/reinduction of tagged tubulin 😉

How do
#trypanosomes
restrict
#IFT
to only 4 doublet microtubules? Two hypotheses were proposed (restriction @ the flagellum base or @ the injection) but in this preprint, Aline Alves reveals it is a third way! It all happens in the proximal portion of the flagellum!

#microtubules
can be recognised, what was only achievable by EM before. Images: Christine Girard-Blanc & Thierry Blisnick. Many thanks to
