Having spent part of my childhood growing up in West Texas, I’m quite familiar with the visceral fear felt when hearing the angry buzzing sound of a rattlesnake nearby. It’s the same feeling I get whenever someone sends me a DM.

From my porch of the house in Olympia, I hear children at the school across the street recite the pledge of allegiance. The painful cognitive dissonance of listening to those sweet, sincere young voices as I know the President of the United States is a child rapist.

I certainly encourage reading, but find myself to be unimpressed by people who claim to read a lot of books. Reading is not necessarily reasoning. While I read books 3 to 4 hours a day, some of the reading time is devoted to what I’ll call “cognitive chewing”. Read, think - then read some more.

Yes, friends and family tell me that I’m being silly - this happens every year, but this year I’m not gonna let that stop me. While I own an actual library, my books reside in an eclectic community. There are books I’ve read, sometimes repeatedly. There are several half-read, treated as eagerly greeted strangers, only to be rejected. And a few very old books now treated as royalty on the high towers of my bookshelves.

Having successfully completed my transition from building pillow forts into building book forts, I find much more assurance of defense from idiotic vandals always lurking nearby. Now off to see about the improving the ramparts with good coffee. ☕️
