The "rule of cool" is apparently the traditional way to run games. I always advocate "learn your character" not just the personality but associated mechanics. I model interpreting the rules at the table. It reduces load on me and empowers players by teaching them how to think about that. #raw

I can actually pick locks, swing swords, orate, ride horses, and rouse rabble, parkour, etc. I did that for my own interest because those are fun skills to acquire. I use them to inform my descriptions. But I don't expect players to know these things as well. But I do encourage them to practice.
