I really, really need academic organizations to think more critically about travel (conferences, talks, and meetings) during the Trump administration. Sadly, most are not.

If someone is going to get queer bashed if they show up as their full selves in public. If someone is going to get COVID (and become futher disabled) if they show up in public. I mean-- what is it that you expect THEM to do? Maybe YOU are the one who needs to do something to make things accessible.

really tired of conversations about how we need to get people to spend more time offline that don't acknowledge that one of the reasons people ARE online is their access needs aren't being met in physical spaces. This is especially true for queer people and disabled people.

Made a public outreach activity. Declined to share it on departmental social media. It'd be nice if I could freely share this totally innocuous nice thing without rational fear of harassment 😭

They actually seem to think we can’t and don’t! We can and we do. It’s just that we can’t prove it and we’re exhausted by constantly turning in academic integrity complaints all the time

This is a big deal. Approval polls, like the media, courts, and Congress, can serve as vehicles for presidential accountability. We are watching in real time as the institutions that could hold this administration to account wither on the vine.

Remembering today that having your heart broken is a necessary step on the path to becoming fully human. Whichever heartbreak is your first, it’s probably critical that a state break your heart so that you can develop a political imagination. If this is your first, I’m sorry and also welcome.

In 2026 I want all of the decent people to remember one thing. You aren’t meant to be this disciplined, this self-sacrificing to survive. The environment is supposed to support good living. We can have that. You are not a failure. That is politics. That is all.

It's the time of year where teachers like giving "fun" holiday activities Please make sure theyre not Xmas centric Yes, many students may enjoy them but unless youre at a religious school, youre bound to have at least one student who will feel alienated & likely won't be comfortable speaking up.

My dad told an apocryphal story about a PhD defense where someone on the committee went off the rails on questioning and the advisor butted in with “Now is neither the time nor the place to get answers to the questions that have been troubling you all your life.”

As someone with ME/CFS my entire life is "rational assessment of the threat environment," because I walk a daily tightrope of illness management. I don't have the luxury of ignoring the science, which overwhelmingly proves the threat of covid is still very real. That's not fear, it's fact.

This piece is just an essential, important and excellent intervention as Coates' Vanity Fair essay was. One NYT column isn't that important, but an accommodationist mindset has spread in center-left elite circles. And it should be rejected forcefully.

I say this every time something of note happens in DC and inevitably someone gets mad at me: It’s not just “where the government is.” It’s a real place with real people living in it. Reducing it to some playground of the elite and powerful is inaccurate and often racist

I was told we would be valuing DEI at my workplace, starting with trauma informed care. I saw them finally starting to do the work to make that true. Being forced back to work with ever diminishing safety precautions made it impossible to trust they meant anything they said about inclusion.
