Home Office continue to spin popularity of settlement package at MPs. The argument is flawed. - the big political headache is the million people directly affected - there is a lot of topspin/framing in the More in Common polling - it is about a 10 year timeline, not the 15 years proposed

A few thoughts on earned settlement after a busy week. (1) Govt is going through consultation after over 200,000 people responded, far higher than other consultations of this type. This means there is still a lot up for grabs to shape the policy, including transitional measures.

The latest Parliament Matters podcast includes a look at how changes to immigration are, or rather, aren’t, scrutinised by parliament. It’s probably not a surprise that I really enjoyed being able to join the conversation.

Most people know so little about settlement, attitudes are v framing dependent So this feels like comfort blanket/denial of political reality stuff that Home Office are circulating to media if More in Common don't have attitudes of the million people directly affected (and the relative salience!)

Reviewing refugee status every 30 months will be a bureaucratic nightmare for the Home Office, already drowning in backlogs. The Refugee Council estimates that these reviews will cost over £1 billion to the taxpayer over the next decade. #asylumreforms

A strong immigration system doesn't need to be a cruel one. It shouldn't need saying - but refugees & asylum seekers are real people, fleeing war and persecution. This daughter of an immigrant is proud of our British and Labour values of respect and not turning our backs on people in real need.
