My 3-day playtest of TLR was a great success! I learned a lot about this game, what needs to be added and adjusted, and, importantly, that Struggles are amazing and incredibly fun. Very excited to get this game across the finish line!l

I get at least one email or message a week from someone telling me that GMing always intimidated them, but that my game gave them a lot of confidence and was really easy to run. But I think the ease of being a Keeper is still a thing that's not generally known about CfB games.

Holding my first The Lands Remaining office hours this morning. The goal: face time with folks who are going to create things for this game (but anyone can show up). Tell them more of my thinking on it, let them pick my brain. Work through some of my own ideas with anyone willing to listen.

A game(ttrpg) will always take on its own life in the hands of people who play it. Plus, whatever you put in a book can never be exhaustive. But all in all, I think that’s the beauty of ttrpgs: they are such a creative endeavor, creating AND playing them, that it’s a really interesting art form!

Also: I reject out of hand that the rule book should give you a complete understanding of how a game works. The rule book can get you really far, but everything takes time and practice. An AP helps you cut down that time and practice.

Someone described the scenarios in my games as "deconstructed modules," and that's pretty damn accurate.

I’m sure everyone is sick of hearing me talk about it, but holy fuck is The Lands Remaining going to be good. It feels like everything I’ve learned about game design, game marketing, and community engagement over the last 10 years is coming together in one really fantastic project. This is the one.

It’s simultaneously horrible and exhilarating for The Lands Remaining to be so inspiring to me right now when I have a million other things I need to work on. That’s at least part of the reason I’m trying to get folks around me involved in it—I need others to carry the hype torch for awhile, haha.

As I get ever closer to solving the CfB fantasy adventure game puzzle with The Lands Remaining, I can’t help but think how much this is going to piss off a certain type of trad gamer. They’re going to hate it and howl about it every chance they get. And that’s how I’ll know I’m on the right track.

I beg of you: read books.

#Ttrpgs are potatoes, not carrots. There is no one true taproot origin story for any game, ttrpg or otherwise. Instead, all the nodes of experience & culture & family & etc etc go into whatever eventually springs forth. The interconnected web of all that came before contributes to whatever is "new."

Inspired by a chat with @heckmueller.bsky.social today, I’m getting *very close* to combat in The Lands Remaining. It’s the last big piece of the “Carved from Brindlewood fantasy game” puzzle.

Read books. Take walks. Hang out with your friends once or twice a week. Maybe therapy, if you need a little extra help. We have the power to shake off the shackles these ghouls want us in.
