Steampunk when it's actually engaging with the punk of it all is about a) the consequences of industrialisation and b) how in the late 19th-early 20th C, technological progress was used as a weapon of colonialism.

all your 'punks' are, at the most basic core, about how technology interacts with systems of oppression. and that should go for steampunk too but I think people forget/ignore that in favour of just seeing it as like a quirky aesthetic. they get hung up on the 'steam' part.

sometimes you're like, why did so-and-so stop writing novels? I love their books, I haven't heard about anything from them in ages. and then it turns out it's because they're eighty years old or something, which is a fair reason to slow down
