I volunteer with an Utrecht non-profit De Fietsmeesters to help teach adults how to bike. Students are almost always women, and mostly new immigrants. There are 16 in this class, and 4 of us volunteers. By the end of 10 weeks everyone is usually successfully biking on the road — it's so empowering!

I'm always amazed at the economic vitality of Utrecht: Businesses are thriving, cafes are full, streets are clean, buses run on time. The main street through town holds buses, service vehicles, and people -- walking, on bike & cargo bikes. Want a city that works? Invest in people, not their cars.
