One of the most interesting things about Dutch cycling culture is how long people keep cycling. Even at 75+ you still see many people on the bike, often every day. That is not by chance. Safe cycle lanes, smooth surfaces, and clear crossings make cycling possible at every age.

In May 2026, the Dutch Cycling Embassy was invited to contribute to the Smart City Congress in Stockholm, Sweden. The yearly conference brings together urban innovators and policymakers focused on the transition towards a smarter urban future. Read more: buff.ly/GlxgIrG

During Velo-city, we sponsored two participants from a developing economy, who might not otherwise have been able to join the conference. One of them was Helena Tito. She is currently currently leading the Maputo Pedalando project, which aims to encourage bicycle use in the Mozambican capital.

One of the most thought-provoking #VC26 sessions came from Pui-Yuen Cheng of the NL Ministry of Infrastructure. Through the eyes of “Carla (82),” she viewed infrastructure through the eyes of older adults—and how confidence, comfort, safety and independence often matter as much as physical design.

In teams, they codeveloped their own project by weighing costs and negotiating competing objectives.
