Since its launch, the NS OV-fiets has become an essential part of daily travel across the Netherlands. An OV-fiets is a shared bicycle you can easily rent at train stations for the last part of your journey. Last year, they recorded 5.9 million trips and added 5,000 new bikes to their fleet.

This week, researchers, policymakers, and mobility experts from China joined the Dutch Cycling Embassy for a three-day study visit. Together we explored the Netherlands through a cycling and active travel lens. The study visit highlights the growing international interest in Dutch cycling.

This bike, developped by TU Delft, is equipped with an electric steering motor that is capable of stabilizing itself at lower speeds than regular bicycles. When ridden this effect enhances the rider's balance at low speeds where falls often occur.

What is a Dutch 'fietsstraat'? These bicycle street are roads designed mainly for bikes. Cars are allowed, but they are guests: they must drive slowly (30 km/h or less) and give way to cyclists. The streets often have red asphalt, bike symbols on the road, and signs saying “cars are guests”.

This is the original 'fietsstraat' in Amsterdam In 2016, the City of Amsterdam was interested in starting a pilot with a different road profile. This resulted in a new type of bicycle street for Amsterdam. In line with other bicycle streets, cyclists have priority over cars (cars are guests).
