one of the least intuitive things about US politics, which Dems constantly get wrong, is that voters favor bold action even when it fails. compromises that create half-assed policies may seem to Dems like "success," but to voters (of both parties!) they just look like weakness and capitulation

i didn't want to step into this discourse but here we are LLMs aren't alive and don't have feelings, obviously. being cruel to them is not harmful to the LLM. but it's not healthy to indulge in cruelty. being cruel to an LLM is motivated by liking the *idea* of it having feelings to hurt.

Almost all discourse distills down to using real people as material to create straw people in the image of the opponent you wish you had.

a social platform with no usernames and no comments just an infinite black expanse, with each post consisting of either a text card or image, each piece of positive engagement gives that post a bigger gravity well, users can move similar posts together in real time to add to that gravity well.

here's my "healthy discourse" story i was once on a forum that had quite high traffic. over 100K users, daily posts numbering in the thousands. still small enough to be managed by a gaggle of human beings, but big enough you needed really good policies to keep it under control 🧵

i think it is something very different bsky has taken on a critical mass of high-engagement liberal users, and those users are complaining about leftists, sex workers, etc. the latter groups are now a small fraction of the total user base, so we are expected to leave

every project to tame an open environment to create "healthy discourse" has historically just made it a safe haven for reactionary extremists at the expense of everyone else good luck though

if you go to see a movie and all you're thinking about when you see a woman on screen is whether she's ever been penetrated, i think you should be put in a shallow grave for the safety of the general public
