A lot of young people will completely destroy themselves attempting to mimic the medication-induced, unnaturally thin physiques that celebrities are normalizing. I don't like critiquing people's bodies, but the norms being reinforced here will prove deadly, and it's fucked up.

The fetishization of a sickly level of thinness has reached such disturbing heights. I'm afraid for young women and girls who internalize this shit. It feels as bad as the 90s, when I was a teenager. I remember sitting in class and hearing very thin girls talk about how Cindy Crawford was "fat."

It isn't fair, people with big followings didn't run for the position of Movement Spokespeople and the rest of us didn't vote for them to be that. But it is what it is, and pretending otherwise does us no favors.

Which means, yes, we have to actually have some of these conversations so we remember the lessons. We have to talk about what is strategic to put out here on the internet where everyone can see it, including fascist propagandists who can and will use it to undermine antiwar organizing.

People with major social media followings are *going* to be considered spokespeople for the movements they speak in favor of, which is not fair but also just the reality. And so it becomes a responsibility of those with big platforms to engage some of these questions.

Think carefully about which lines are really worth crossing here. As a movement, is it really worth demonizing enlisted people in way that tars vets with the same brush and potentially alienates them? Is it worth mocking the war death itself, to seem to be mocking civilian war grief itself?

Which is a strategic reason to be very thoughtful about which bridges we burn right now with our rhetoric. So yes, say that particular gold star family member is a racist. She is. But.

There are certain conversations about what it means to serve in the military under a Trump/Hegseth ethos that are going to have to be had. And veterans will be poltiically credentialed to speak to that new reality in ways that the rest of us can't.

The fact is, if we end up with boots on the ground under this monstrous regime, we absolutely will have officially sanctioned, visible events that make Abu Ghraib look like a birthday party. There are going to come very clear moments to have a conversation about what it means to follow orders, now.

You can have some very strong opinions about the ethics of enlistment AND at the same time think strategically about how you engage the subject in public. Discretion isn't always cowardice.

And they have. It is organizing that has been done, impressively, in the past. These are not hypotheticals, there is a playbook that has been tested.

It's not theoretical, that organizing has happened. They have more popular credibility than almost anyone when it comes to calling a war an unjust death trap. They can speak to their communities in a way the rest of us can't.

The people who are veterans because they were drafted, or because they enlisted back in a pre-9/11 time when war seemed like a memory, or because they were 18 and needed a way to escape a desperate or dead end situation? They're real, too. And many of them are conflicted, and reachable.

Listen, fuck the chuds that enlisted because they were excited to kill people because flag. Few of them are ever going to come to the antiwar side, they are a lost cause as far as organizing is concerned. And they exist and they are real. However.

There are paths to get popular support for an antiwar position. Antiwar activists within labor here in Philly were able to get unions and labor institutions to take antiwar stances, despite and in fact I would argue BECAUSE of a strong veteran presence in labor.

7% is a lot by itself, and then you have all the folks who know and care about someone in that 7%. You're getting to a pretty big portion of the population at that point. That's a LOT of people you'll alienate from the antiwar movement when you yell that enlisted people are all evil.

Roughly 7% of the country has served in the military at some point. Some of that population are chuds who enlisted to meet new people and kill them, some of them are from poor and marginalized communities who saw this as the only path out. It's a mixed bag, but also a big one.

Like, I don't know what to tell you, the US is a country that has long popularly fetishized military service. There really isn't a path to kicking out the fascists that doesn't involve a mass movement against them. And you have to square those two realities somehow.

I am very weary of comfortable people who would rather feel morally superior than talk about how you actually stop the warmongers and end the war. And more than that, get actively mad at people who DO want to have those conversations.

A really difficult aspect of leftist organizing in the US is that we rarely have the funds to institutionalize our movements, and as a consequence our wisdom is rarely institutionalized and preserved. It's hard watching this happen over and over again when it comes to talking about war.
