Trudeau named not reforming the voting system as his big regret. Starmer shouldn't repeat his mistake. The stakes are now much higher than just who wins the next election. When there's such a disconnect between how people vote and who wins seats, trust in democracy is at risk.

Today is International Day of Democracy. In the UK, we routinely elect Gvts with a minority of votes, and most of our parliament is entirely unelected, with a bloated upper chamber stuffed with patrons and a few clerics. We need major constitutional reform but have few turkeys voting for Xmas.

The more parties are performing well, the more random election results become. We end up with Parliaments that look less and less like what the country voted for - and even less like what people actually want. There's a more rational way of doing this. It's called Proportional Representation.

"An electoral system that gave a perverse picture of national preferences when there was a two-party duopoly goes completely haywire when 4 or 5 parties score in the high teens or 20s." Exactly this. FPTP can't handle our multi-party reality. Now more than ever: it must be scrapped.

Over the past 10 years, the UK has had: - 6 Prime Ministers - 8 Chancellors of the Exchequer - 9 Foreign Secretaries - 10 Home Secretaries Tell us again how First Past the Post leads to stable and effective governments.

This week the Devolution Bill, which abolishes FPTP for Mayors, passed second reading 🎉 MP after MP got up to highlight the damage this outdated voting system does to our democracy. Whether we're electing Mayors, councillors or MPs, we need a system where every vote counts.
