Households' near-term inflation expectations nudged down a touch in Q2, according to the Bank of England's latest Inflation Attitudes Survey. But at 3.2%, they remain well above the 2% inflation target, so will likely remain a concern for the MPC.

I was surprised to see in today's ONS figures that UK goods exports suddenly rose 3.5% in Q1/25. Then I found this was almost entirely driven by a surge in UK aluminium exports to the US ahead of Trump's tariffs. This alone pushed UK GDP growth by ~0.2 ppts (out of 0.7 ppts total in Q1). Amazing.

Our latest #manufacturing survey doesn’t exactly paint a picture of strength – output flat, cost pressures strong and hiring falling. Also early signs of tariff-related concerns seeping in – big spike in worries over pol-econ conditions abroad, and weakening competitiveness in non-EU markets.

Well that's several days' worth of work gone down the drain

Near-term momentum remains weak, according to our latest business surveys. Continued feedback that NICs increase, NLW uprating and concerns over the Employment Rights Bill are hitting activity. And more citations of tariffs uncertainty leading to a pause in some projects

It's difficult to reconcile the data around the cautious consumer - not least another pick up in the savings ratio - with the strength in the retail sales. There are probably good reasons to put more weight on either set of data, but the discrepancy does muddy the true picture of consumer activity
