The NWS is now experiencing wide firing/layoffs. This is insane. The NWS is one of the best forms of govt public service there is. The NWS isn't flawless but goodness, firing and reducing an already understaffed and underfunded agency is just wrong. There will be profound repercussions to this.

3 years ago tonight, I chased the historic December 2021 Iowa Derecho. I saw 3 tornadoes that night all traveling at an absurd 80-90 mph forward speed. Each was a long track EF-2 and one of the tornadoes I saw ran over the Twister Hill movie site from the movie Twister.

We got to see the baby with an ultrasound today, and can absolutely confirm it's a boy! (we knew this already but you know, double down) We got to see all of the baby's body parts and everything inside like bones, brain, heart, stomach, umbilical cord. Freaking wild dude. Like this is crazy. Wow.

Is it #tornado Tuesday? Me and @strmchsrhunterf.bsky.social were within 1000 yards of this Nebraska tornado on May 12th 2023. An unforgettable day that was also my birthday!

An eruption ~2030Z from AR3901 could finally have a solar storm headed for Earth. ☀️ Analysis & modeling are still underway as coronagraph imagery finally backfills, so there are no official results yet. I suspect a weak glancing blow is possible, likely within the timeframe of late on the 27th. 1/2

500-hPa height anomaly maps for December show it will cool down substantially - but they tell us next to nothing about whether or not it'll snow. Take these 5 GEFS ensemble members. All have a persistent East US trough, but range from a major Northeast snowstorm to no Northeast snowstorm at all:
