After one last attempt to ski the groomed end of the Banadad, aborted because of wind debris over the trail, we switched plans and skis to try the Hoks on the "Moose Trail". Getting there requires first following 1/2 mi of snowmobile trail, freshly groomed this morning! #Huskies #Skijoring

Day #6, X-C Skiing George Washington Pines This is a "groomed" multi-use, dog-friendly trail close to Grand Marais, so it gets a lot of traffic. You can barely see the track here at the beginning! Because of the recent winds, everything was scattered with twigs and needles. #Skijoring #Huskies

Day #5, Breaking trail on Forest "Road" 1310 A pristine trail with convenient plowed parking just off the Gulflint Trail? What luck! Wonder why no one has turned this into a snowmobile highway yet... Oh!... There was just enough room to squeeze past the alder bramble to the other side...

Day #4, Grand Marais & Lk Superior Warm weather meant sticky snow, so we chose to drive down to Grand Marais. We explored the shore of L Superior at Artist's Point, enjoying all the fascinating ice colors & formations, then hit a few shops & had Hungry Hippie (fry bread) Tacos before driving back.

Day #3, Hok/Backcountry skiing on the ungroomed west end of the Banadad Trail. We knew this end of the trail was not being groomed this year, but we were curious to see what conditions were like anyway. Snow was definitely deep! But not too deep to dampen Zeena's sense of adventure!

Day #2: traditional Nordic skiing on the Banadad trail! This is a dogs-permitted (though not exactly "dog-friendly") 27k groomed trial that parallels the Gunflint Trail along the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness Area. We did 4.3mi/7k out, & then the same back. Long enough for all of us!

First day up on the edge of the Boundary Waters Wilderness with the huskies! The snow here is deep! New challenges finding places we can ski without the pups struggling. You'll have to pop over to the Fediverse for the full story. Bsky is too limiting!

My WolfTrack team! I also meant to mention about 18 miles in, I saw an actual wolf on the trail. That was sooo cool! He was heading down the trail towards my team then hopped off the side into the woods. It truly was a beautiful day to be out with the dogs ♥️

One last day for skijoring before a long period of melting is expected! We drove to the other side of the Twin Cities metro to Baker Park Reserve, which we'd never been to before. 3 of the 5 mile dog-friendly trail were groomed. Snow was a bit slow as it warmed up... #Skijoring #Huskies

Clearly the ASPCA should be looking into the cruel lack of pets going on here!

With warm temps cycling in and out, we ventured out onto Jensen Lake while temps were still below freezing. We hadn't been out on a frozen lake since last winter, but Zeena immediately recognized that this is a FUN place where you get to zoom from one sniff-and-dig spot along the shore to another.

Impromptu Husky Playdate! Passing our neighborhood tennis courts we noticed Scout, a black and white husky, having some off-leash time inside. Tonttu and Zeena wanted to say hi! Scout's human readily agreed, so everyone got to run around off leash for a bit.

Need an emergency last minute handler for Midnight Run!!! My handler may need to back out last second for health issues (TOTALLY VALID) but I can't do the race without a handler. If you drive yourself to Marquette, I need you Feb 13-14. If you ride with me, Feb 12-15. (Continued in thread)

Back on the snow today! We second-guessed our plans to go further west & instead stuck to the more local Murphy Hanrehan horse/pet trails. It was heavily trampled, but good enough to ski. Here, Tonttu and Jeff go off-trail for a straight, if lumpy, descent against a clear sky. #Huskies #Skijoring

Finally Fresh Snow! It wasn't much more than an inch, but it was enough to give us good glide and control on the icy base. Everyone enjoyed a chance to get moving faster than a hiking pace, and the huskies had fun "hunting" mouses and deer along the way. #Huskies #Skijoring
