A Paramount News camera crew captured the entire slaughter on film. Fearing it would cause widespread riots, Paramount initially suppressed the video. /5

The crowd was blocked by a line of nearly 300 Chicago police officers. A brief, tense standoff ensued, then police fired revolvers into the crowd, tossed tear gas and beat retreating protesters with billy clubs. Investigations would prove that most of the fleeing workers were shot in the back. /4

On Memorial Day, close to 1,000 to 2,500 striking workers, family members and sympathizers gathered at a nearby union headquarters called Sam’s Place. They began a march through a field toward the Republic Steel gates to establish a legal picket line. It was a festive, picnic-like atmosphere. /3

Earlier in 1937, U.S. Steel agreed to recognize the Steel Workers Organizing Committee. However, smaller competitors — collectively known as Little Steel — resolutely refused. Tom Girdler, president of Republic Steel, was aggressively anti-union. In response to the dead, workers went on strike. /2

Garner died on Dec. 30, 2017, at age 27. She suffered major brain damage after a severe asthma attack triggered a massive heart attack. Civil rights advocates remember her as a warrior who bore the compounding physical and emotional toll of fighting systemic injustice on the front lines. /end
