On May 7, 1955, while driving home, Lee was shot in the face with a shotgun by assailants in a passing car. He crashed into a house and died on the way to the hospital. Local authorities initially claimed Lee died in a car accident and that the lead pellets in his face were “dental fillings.” /5

Lee served as vice president of the Regional Council of Negro Leadership, which promoted self-help and civil rights through economic empowerment initiatives, boycotts, voter registration and civic education. The group actively protested police misconduct and brutality against Black citizens. /4

Lee was the first Black person to register to vote in Humphreys County since Reconstruction. In 1953, he co-founded the Belzoni branch of the NAACP and registered approximately 92 new African American voters. He used his typesetting skills and print shop to produce materials for these efforts. /3

Lee worked manual labor jobs while educating himself, then later became a Baptist minister in Belzoni. He was also a successful businessman: He and his wife, Rosebud, owned a grocery store that primarily served the local Black community, and ran a print shop out of the back room of their home. /2

#ResistanceRoots Rev. George Washington Lee was born on this day in 1903 in Edwards, Miss. He was a minister and civil rights leader who was assassinated in Belzoni, Miss., for his efforts to register Black voters. He is often recognized as the first martyr of the modern civil rights movement. /1

Side note: Bud Billiken was a character featured in a dedicated children’s section that the Chicago Defender launched in 1923. The character evolved from a good luck charm to become a symbol of pride, inspiration, and hope for African American children, especially on Chicago’s South Side.

The Chicago Defender made Abbott one of the nation’s first self-made Black millionaires. He died of Bright’s disease in 1940 and is buried at Lincoln Cemetery in Blue Island, Ill. His nephew, John H. Sengstacke, succeeded him as publisher. /end

The Defender fostered the careers of literary giants such as Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Brooks and Richard Wright. In 1929, Abbott founded the Bud Billiken Parade and Picnic, which remains the second-largest parade in the U.S. and a major celebration of African American culture. /7

On Oct. 7, 1916, the Defender launched the “Great Northern Drive” with the editorial “Farewell, Dixie Land.” The campaign urged African Americans to leave the Jim Crow South and move North for better opportunities. Abbott even declared May 15, 1917, as the official start date for the migration. /6

The Defender used sensational headlines and graphic photos to document lynchings that Southern white papers refused to report. Abbott prohibited the words “Negro” or “colored,” instead using “the Race” and “Race men/women.” However, the paper labeled the race of white individuals in parentheses. /5

The slogan “American Race Prejudice Must Be Destroyed” appeared on the front-page header of every issue. It was part of a nine-point platform (the “Defender’s Bible”) that demanded full enfranchisement of African Americans, integrated trade unions and federal anti-lynching legislation. /4

Unable to practice law due to discrimination, he founded the Chicago Defender in 1905 with an initial investment of just 25 cents. The newspaper gained national influence by acting as a “racial watchdog,” using provocative headlines and unflinching editorials to advocate for Black Americans. /3

When the DOJ protects rapist, felons, pedophiles, and insurrectionist, you know the USA is a christian nation.

I think the way this is being done is to create confusion. Would they deliberately release fake documents so people distrust ALL they see? Why announce a fake document but no proof to support the claim? Why release a fake document at all? No structure to releases is also confusing.

What we’re being told is that a guy who is an adjudicated rapist, who was credibly accused of sexual assault by dozens of women, who paid hush money to a porn star, who cheated on all his wives, who is mentioned hundreds of times in the Epstein files, couldn’t possibly be a sexual predator.

I've now watched the censored 60 Minutes report on CECOT. If you watched it too—and if you have any decency at all—I'm sure you came to the same conclusion I did: winning elections won't be enough; people like Stephen Miller and Kristi Noem will need to be charged and imprisoned.

I hope you all have time to rest and spend time with family and friends! The fight is waiting for us and we have a lot of work ahead of us to protect the constitution! We all must have equal rights or none of us do!
