Few employers met the requirements. /1

Both U.S. and Mexican businesses became heavily dependent on braceros (manual laborers), many of whom bribed their way into a contract. Some employers preferred to operate outside the agreement, leading to an increase in undocumented immigrants and exploitation of the workers. /3

Braceros became an important part of the region’s economy. However, strikes were common as braceros fought for their wages and the money that was allegedly put into savings accounts for them to receive when their contracts ended. Food and housing were commonly substandard. /4

Congress allowed the Bracero Program to expire on Dec. 31, 1964, which led to increases in illegal immigration that we see up to the present day. The United Farm Workers, which arose in the 1960s and 70s, continued fighting many of the same inequalities that the braceros faced. /end
