One final observation is that Ghorayshi completely overlooks the very dark history of forced institutionalization of autistic people. It also minimizes the very real difficulties with suicide and mental health high functioning folks have. The spectrum reduces stigma and allows for more advocacy.

There are so many better people who can speak to this issue overall than I can but this is incredibly frustrating to see the NYT run this playbook on yet another community and I can't stay silent on it.

Of course people with autism who can speak for themselves and advocate for how they're treated are labeled activists. The mothers leading orgs pushing the manufactured controversy are profiled as parents rather than activists. This is the same exact framing they used against trans people.

It then uses the same narrative framing of a one very rare diagnosis becoming much more common after diagnostic changes.

This literally the same line for trans youth. The diagnosis is too watered down and we can't help the real "insert here" population and these others are ruining it for us. Then the framing of pitting these parents against unnamed activists.

She then gets the narrative of a major controversy by quoting the former head of autism speaks, the org that promotes false theories about vaccines.

This is basically line for line the exact same thing she said about gender dysphoria in trans youth right down to the divide between parents and activists along with social media battles.

Azeen Ghorayshi at the NYT has moved on from going after trans people and is now pushing the leasing question that autism diagnoses are too common because of its expansion of it to a spectrum. archive.ph/Whji1

like i say it's p-hacked, and it is, but it's more accurate to say that they took the surveymonkey moe calculator webpage and applied it to bad + cherrypicked data with a bad instrument and bravely declared 'you can just do things', but it's not as fun without the explanation.

that gets interesting. that shrinks the sample size of married monogamous people –the plurality of adults– down to just 46 people. over an order of magnitude away from the population baseline (BAD) AND is is so noisy it may not be a mathematically valid sample size (WORST), depending on drop rates.

so we already know this population is nonrepresentative. but we can push it a little bit farther. in a long-term committed relationship (8.77%) must include more than 95% of married couples (that's just the monogamy statistics). we also know this is a selection from the dv- the 53% who said yes.

the fun answer is that their own numbers are insane. we know from 2024/5 acs and pew polls that the marriage fraction is bounded around 49-52%. the max marriage fraction you can get from the responses is about 31%. that is a hard ceiling, unless **72%** of married people are presently swingers.

the hard answer is that surveymonkey is NOT a direct representation of the united states; online is not real. even without a vpn it is easy to establish your location as in the us. these are cataclysmic-grade type 1 errors. population modeling is legitimately hard! you can't just guess and post.

but eek how do you know it's p-hacked? great question! three ways. the easy answer is that when someone claims their results have the same moe and confidence interval, i know they don't know what they're talking about. there's another thing, too. we'll come back to it.*
