we have PrEP because of these monkey studies. animal welfare in medical research is extremely strictly limited and regulated to ensure ethical use. there is no replacement for these animal models in biomedical research.

I also want to point out that this work was entirely funded by NIH through the HEAL Initiative. The future of HEAL is somewhat uncertain right now and I hope this paper will play a small role in convincing folks that this work is important and will have an impact on pain science and treatment.

The Python Software Foundation was recommended for a $1.5M grant from the National Science Foundation. The terms of the award said PSF could not work on DEI, whether or not the grant funding was used for it. PSF therefore declined the funding. Science suffers, but commitment to core values remains
