Pretty sure this is the first time we have a real-time TORP tornado probability domain in this region of the country. Excited to see how TORP does for potential non-landspout cases in Western Region!

A fire burned through our Lake Carl Blackwell Mesonet site around 3:41-3:45pm. One of our thermometers measured a 1-minute average temperature of 173 F at 3:42pm. The 2 meter anemometer is now reporting 0, which indicates that it likely was completely melted. #okwx #okmesonet

Second this! But please don't forget about the folks in the other NOAA Line Offices. The folks in OAR, NESDIS, etc are developing our future weather radar technologies, operational forecast models, warning paradigms... the list goes on. The entire enterprise is valuable and deserves to be saved. 🥺

Also, if this wasn’t cruel enough, zero indication that any of us will be provided any severance or leave payout as we have no right to this as employees in our probationary period. Cut off completely with no notice. Email access is already cut off as well. Fastest govt IT has ever moved.

NWS is already understaffed, and this mass firing is only going to increase the chance that warnings are not issued in a timely manner and that key equipment like radars and IT systems will fail at the worst time.

Welp, I too was one of the NWS probationary folks that got terminated today. 8 years as an AWIPS contractor previously, I finally got the Fed job I had been wanting. Worked on implementing the next generation of capabilities for AWIPS. A lot of promising stuff coming that is now up in the air...

My heart breaks for those NWS/NOAA employees who are being let go today. National Weather Service is already incredibly understaffed and every meteorologist is critical and essential. This will undoubtedly cost lives as severe weather and hurricane season ramps up.
