In sum, Europe has little to lose in hitting back hard. The hope here is Europe hits back hard and prompts Trump to deescalate, just as he has done on China. Thus by escalating Europe is also creating a pathway to deescalate this crisis.

China and Russia must be having a field day. They are the ones who benefit from divisions among Allies. If Greenland’s security is at risk, we can address this inside NATO. Tariffs risk making Europe and the United States poorer and undermine our shared prosperity. (1/2)

After the Cold War, the US itself closed or sharply downsized many military facilities in Greenland, including Sondrestrom Air Base and early-warning radar sites. Denmark remained a loyal ally, and did not object to US presence. Claims of Danish security neglect are fallacious.

News Analysis: President Trump's decision to send a high-powered U.S. delegation to Greenland, apparently uninvited, is already backfiring. Greenland has blasted him as “aggressive” and asked Europe for backup, and the visit is strengthening bonds between Greenland and Denmark.

A few days ago, I was thinking of America and the idea of Europe. Vance and Hegseth touched on this same exact matter in their recent notorious online conversation, so might as well post my thoughts here. So, a thread follows. I'm no Americanist; this is mostly just thinking out loud.

Now would be a good time for some concrete actions. Like seizing the frozen Russian assets and handing them over to Ukraine.
