Lalo Romo turns 15 today. He'll get a big, juicy steak (and because he's the bestest boy ever, I'm sure he'll share with Ximena). Can't tell you how lucky I am to have him take care of me all these years, so fortunate. Dogs are perfect.

During the hard freeze of ‘21 I lost my night blooming cereus. Thankfully, I had shared a cutting with friend whose plant now thrived. He shared cuttings from the plant I’d shared with him, and last night, after several years, it bloomed. Here’s to new beginnings. ❤️ Hope you have a great week.

At the end of March, I saw three tiny eggs in a nest a cardinal couple had built in one of my hanging night blooming cereus plants. I did not want to disturb the nest so I stayed away. Then came three chicks. Today, they learned to fly. ❤️ Happy spring!

The name ‘capirotada’ (Mexican bread pudding) is derived from the word ‘capirotes’ which are the pointed, conical hats worn during religious processions during Holy Week in Spain. They are worn as a form of penance and annonimity and are believed to have emerged in the late 15th century.

Harvard has set an example for other higher-ed institutions - rejecting an unlawful and ham-handed attempt to stifle academic freedom, while taking steps to make sure students can benefit from an environment of intellectual inquiry, rigorous debate and mutual respect. Let’s hope others follow suit.
