The power outages and freezing conditions in Ukraine right now are insane. Greenland news and war “coverage fatigue” not giving it the presence in headlines it deserves. The humanitarian impact is absolutely staggering.

The Trump disbelief that the Norwegian govt doesn't control the Nobel process is deeply indicative of his thinking. He can't conceive that an institution could (or should) be genuinely independent of coercion or political power. That's the change he represents.

Can we speak the truth on this? Trump has been "unable to end the war" because he has failed to bully and threaten Ukraine into accepting a deal that would make Putin happy.

It might sound silly, but I mean it: The easiest and most potent way for Europe to hurt Trump this year is to once again use its cultural soft power and to threaten a boycott of the World Cup. It would become a completely meaningless event and would hurt him where he is most vulnerable - his vanity.

One thing that now even the most hopeful have to admit, is that the unctuous European tactic of flattering, praising, massaging Trump has been a catastrophic failure and made things worse.

2026 is seeing that the U.S. Army is mobilizing a unit specialized for winter conditions, but not knowing if the intended mission is violent repression of an American city or stealing territory from a U.S. treaty ally.

A key point here in an excellent thread by @maxbergmann.bsky.social: Continuing with the grovelling strategy, distasteful to the European publics from the start, would likely have a domestic political cost to European leaders. It’s time for a strong response now. Enough is enough.

In sum, Europe has little to lose in hitting back hard. The hope here is Europe hits back hard and prompts Trump to deescalate, just as he has done on China. Thus by escalating Europe is also creating a pathway to deescalate this crisis.

Bingo! This has been obvious for a long time. Trump places no value on NATO so he has zero problems with using a negotiation tactic where he puts NATO on the line.

Yes and no. Greenland is a pointless problem of our own making if we still consider the transatlantic alliance as intact. But it is not a crisis made by Europe—and Europe is the only player in this that actually considers the Ukraine war a problem. Trump is fine with giving Putin a helping hand.

As Rasmussen says: “the world’s attention is now focused on something that does not represent a threat — namely Greenland, a friendly ally of the US — instead of focusing on what should be the focal point right now: namely, how can we force Putin to the negotiation table in Ukraine?”

It is time to do something about this and invest more in our own IT industry.

I completely agree. Given how Trump has behaved in both the first and now second presidency, it should be clear to everyone that Trump does not care about principles. He cares about leverage and strength. And we need to be ready for a fight - or else we will loose it.

Wise thoughts. DT has no interests in being in an alliance with someone he views as weak - what is in it for him? Europe needs to be and act strong to be seen as a worthy partner.

The US is more likely to fight Europe than fight for it.

The fact that European states would simply roll over and accept a US seizure of Greenland (and they would), shows how little they have adjusted to the new world.

And to repeat what I said at New Year, Europe-US relations will almost certainly improve if Miller et al are replaced by a new administration in 2029 but it's wishful thinking for Europeans to believe all they need to do is hang on for 3 years and it will all go back to normal.
