There's a reason @sill.social is not a separate experience with its own post lexicon. It would never work because it wouldn't generate any discourse. My vision for Sill and similar tools is that you can reframe open social data into a healthier experience for people who want that.

Just noticed this fun little @sill.social detail where showing all the accounts that are discussing a story turns it into a sticky header that you can then collapse without having to scroll back up. Nice.

We conflate two things when we talk about the impact of social: 1. How do institutions (news, government, etc.) distribute information? 2. How do friends communicate? These are separate things! Microblogging, short-form video, etc. compress them into the same thing and no one is better for it.

I've been saying this to people privately lately! My other analog is Apple News: the numbers say people seem to actually like reading news in a well-designed, performant experience (compared to most news websites). What if we had an experience that good, but publishers had control?

not to get too ahead of some other stuff i'm working on but i think every news org should be able to build experiences like this that they own via atproto. once permissioned data lands you can tie in business models really well. "substack on atproto" is too narrow, we can do better.

Link cards should show publish dates when available! This has saved me multiple times when browsing my @sill.social feed. Just yesterday an NYT story from 1993 was going around. The original poster knew that, but others definitely didn't!

Yesterday Bluesky went down. @eurosky.social servers worked but we couldn't communicate as we don't have an app. Our next step is to build everything we need to operate without Bluesky. We're raising €100,000 to build a European app backend supporting 100k+ users. Let's do this fund.eurosky.tech
