Quick demo on the use case for more link data in @sill.social. Browse by publication, author, and topic, and see all the links in the history of your network, plus what your network said. This is only working locally right now, still need to figure out production scale. Probably some DuckDB.

Working on a rework of filters in @sill.social. Changes: 1. New "minimum shares" filter. Really useful in conjunction with sorting by new. 2. Grid layout to make more efficient use of space. 3. Filter state is saved to local storage, so when you return, Sill remembers your filter state.

Added a quick new feature to @sill.social today. You can now set up custom notifications based on lists/feeds. So, for example, I now have an RSS feed that updates whenever 2+ people share the same link in my basketball list. Notifications are a powerful way to make social media work on your time.

Since migrating sill.social to a new host last week, I've had the most stable week of operating Sill in its history. I suspect the hard drive on the previous server was slowly failing for a long time. Anyway, now's a great time to sign up for Sill!

sill.social is back! Unfortunately, I could not save the database. That means you'll need to recreate your account in order to use Sill. I'm really sorry for the downtime and inconvenience.

Posting this to hold myself accountable. Sill will relaunch tomorrow morning, with or without recovered data. I have a process that removes corrupted data from my backup, but it is quite slow. I'm going to let it run overnight and see what happens. If it's not done or close, I launch anyway.

Basically where I'm at is to either: - Attempt to recover my offsite backup (which is a little old) and recover most user accounts - Just launch Sill on the new server I've provisioned (with a new provider), make everyone sign up again. Obviously option 1 is preferable!

The production failure was hardware failure at Latitude. Nothing I can do about it. That's why we backup offsite. But I made a mistake: I exported a pg_dump file through `docker exec -it`, which corrupts the binary format. But I can see the data, I just have to get it in a workable format. Ideas?

Sill update: My production database was completely corrupted. Nothing I can do to recover it. My off-site backups were... also corrupted, but maybe in a salvageable way. Maybe someone can help? (See next post)

In the meantime, I'm researching alternative hosts where I can restore Sill from a backup. But this will mean lost data and lost user accounts. I'm doing everything I can to prevent this scenario, which is why this is taking an absurdly long time.

Here's the deal with Sill. Latitude.sh's support has been abysmal and has my data in limbo. I have offsite backups, but they are less recent than what's on my hard drive at Latitude. I'm holding out hope that I'll get that data back if they get their act together.

Okay well, who do you like for hosting bigger bare metal servers on the cloud, because latitude.sh is completely failing me. Been a total disaster for the last 24 hours. AWS/GCP/etc. generally too expensive for the size I'm going for.

Coming back to life, will be monitoring all day to make sure these issues have been addressed.

Sill is continuing to experience major outages. Still working, really sorry about this.

Gonna need to bring Sill down for an hour or so for db maintanence. Starting soon.
