A lot of the indie (and major!) comic book companies have NO IDEA how to market graphic novels. Like, they have a plan for monthly floppy comic books, but OGNs? Nothing. Nada. Zip. Clueless.

In all seriousness, publishers are going to have to figure out how to market books in the post-social-media landscape. That should be an implicit part of their job. What authors/artists can do on their own is increasingly limited and siloed.

Comic books are (and this isn’t hyperbole) the greatest story telling medium that has ever existed. The combination of text and images rendered with a human hand is the most direct path from one mind to another. All other medium pale in comparison.

Asked in today’s ST Culture what his favourite book is by a living author, Jonathan Coe replies that he’s “a little bit obsessed with ‘Ducks: Two Years In The Oil Sands’ by the Canadian artist Kate Beaton”. Which did make me think how far comics have come in terms of cultural legitimacy.

Honestly between this and trying to cut nurse/teacher/doctor salaries, I'm fully onboard with stripping all MP benefits and entitlements and slashing their pay. If they're going to punch down on the most vulnerable, they should live on a median salary, pay for their own meals and housing, etc.

Comics/graphic novels aren’t recognized or taken seriously as literature in the publishing industry, despite taking twice as much work to create as prose novels, and it just breaks my heart. That’s it, that’s the take. Please read more comics.

I think both the monthly comics format and the insistance on volume 1s being self contained stifle the storytelling. A lot of interesting stories are hurt by the industry trying to force everything into those two molds.

Oh another hot take, everyone talks about how to keep readers of MG/YA gns as they age out. But the discussion always ignores that a lot of those gns are contemporary stories (not SFF). So until we have a decent selection of adult contemporary stories they will keep aging out.
