Victory! Gov. Newsom has signed AB1264, a food safety and school nutrition bill that sets a clear definition for “ultra-processed food," and will eliminate nutritionally unhealthy foods and products containing unsafe additives from cafeterias while pushing food companies to improve their products.

This week, CSPI attended the BAHI Summit in Baltimore to learn from national experts in public health! We heard from community leaders, visited the Center for a Livable Future, and our own Sara John presented on restrictive covenants and their relation to food retailers and food access.

How does the Trump administration's 2026 budget contradict the USDA's small farmers policy agenda? Taken together, these two documents lay bare the hypocrisy of this administration's approach to nutrition security and agriculture: death by a thousand funding cuts.

Good to see Tyson Foods commit to eliminating four harmful additives from some of their products this year! Additionally, we hope their elimination of HFCS will result in an overall reduction in added sugar in their products, which is the real issue. We'll be keeping tabs to hold Tyson accountable!

Big win in California! Last week, the #CAleg passed a bill requiring chain restaurants that sell kids' meals to have at least one meal combo that meets expert nutrition standards. Restaurant meals are consistently high in cals, sodium, & sat fat, and now families will have healthier options.

New research brief out today from Healthy Eating Research (with CSPI co-authorship!) on the historical context of SNAP purchase restrictions, participant perceptions, and the effects on purchasing and diet quality. Very timely as RFK Jr's MAHA report calls for implementing/expanding restrictions.

Good news from Chicago! Last Thursday, Mayor Brandon Johnson signed an executive order that established nutrition standards for foods and beverages sold or served on city-owned property and requires all city agencies to meet the nutrition standards within one year.
