Carmen Rodriguez of @uclmedsci.bsky.social was highly commended in our 2025 Image Competition. Her image shows the interaction between osteosarcoma (bone cancer) and osteoclasts, which can be corrupted to help the tumour spread. Scientists are exploring how to support the immune system to respond.

Eitan Mirvis of @kingslsm.bsky.social was highly commended in our 2025 Image Competition for a picture of his colleague Dr Le Anh Luong, preparing to collect T cells from blood samples. These will be used in CAR T cell therapy, a ground-breaking treatment to boost the immune system to fight cancer.

Daire Hanna @qmbci.bsky.social was highly commended in our 2025 Image Competition. This lab-grown model of pancreatic cancer shows the dense extracellular matrix (white). By recreating this in the lab, scientists can test drug combinations to help the immune system penetrate and attack the cancer.

Our final keynote is Prof Simon Cherry of @UCDavis.bsky.social, discussing the latest developments in cancer imaging with total-body positron emission tomography. Prof Cherry's lab has developed technologies that improve diagnosis, stratify patients and assess responses to treatment.

Over lunch at our TME, Imaging and Translation Symposium we hosted a 'speed dating' session mixing TME experts with imaging specialists and challenging them to help us set the course for this research theme at our Centre. Our 'speed dating' session brings together experts in basic tumour microenvironment biology with translation specialists. We've set them the challenge of mapping upcoming trends in TME, imaging and translation, to help the Centre map the future direction of this research theme.
