Fine: 1) What’s happening to the U.S. is part of a transnational far-right, autocratic wave and it cannot be treated as a purely domestic issue 2) A major subset of these dynamics is globalized kleptocracy/oligarchy; tackling that requires rebuilding & enhancing int’l anti-corruption mechanisms

I do think that Trump has permanently undermined U.S. power and that, if we ever get a pro-democracy regime again, it'll have to pursue a more humble foreign policy. While that's not worth the costs of the current moment, there are upsides to that. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The other things to note here: the U.S. cannot simply "stop doing hegemonic ordering." The footprint of the US is so large that inaction is itself action. Think about how many people are dying because Trump and Musk decided to axe USAID. What does it mean to "pull back," e.g., re: NATO & Ukraine?

Who is this performance for? Trump's current mood seems to be "pressure Putin by playing up NATO and Ukraine strength."
