Here is a practical change that would give more people the chance to do what the government says. Give temporary leave to those from high grant countries: single men currently in hotels would have both the right to work and the responsibility to sort out their own housing

The only way this 20 year thing works is if it actually deters. If it doesn’t, it just stores up more and more problems, more and more costs - lawyers, bureaucrats etc - in an ever-accumulating mass. And there’s no real reason to believe it will deter. Deterrence generally is overrated.

The government plans to remove technical statutory basis for asylum seeker support. Govt says it want asylum seekers to work if they are allowed to. Their policy is asylum seekers can't work (but some can after 12 months). Govt don't plan to let asylum seekers work once case is 6 months old

Not the main point, but turkey only became the main Christmas dish for ordinary Britons in the mid-twentieth century. Before that, if families could afford a bird at Christmas it was more likely to be goose (which, unlike turkey, is actually native to the British Isles).
