So much has gone wrong in US press reporting on Trump because the White House reporters are people who have exclusively covered US politics. They need people who have worked in Hungary, Turkey, etc. The relevant knowledge isn't Reagan factoids; it's the dynamics of competitive authoritarianism.

Yesterday The Intercept posted the piece I wrote for them to X. That account has 800K followers. As of now, the post has 5,500 impressions, 8 likes, and the only reply includes a Pepe the Frog image and the n-word. So yes, seems like the algorithm is working as intended!

I've been reporting in East Africa on the impact of President Trump's USAID cuts, and I find that not only are children dying in large numbers but the pace is accelerating as stockpiles run out and people grow weaker.

Agree with this. I donāt love Obamaās framing here of ātaking cancel culture to a new levelā. āCancel cultureā was a result of free citizens exercising their own speech rights, not government coercion.

Feel free to continue arguing over the shooter's motives, but please understand that *it doesn't matter*. There's a organized political movement that plans to suppress, arrest, or kill its political opposition. It it seeking pretexts. Anything will do. If it's not this, it'll be something else.

When we think of sexism, it's easy to think of *active* efforts to discriminate against women. But sexism also operates *passively* - like through our inaction on issues like childcare and paid family leave. In that context, return-to-office policies are sexist in consequence, even if not in design.

The mortgage fraud claim against Lisa Cook is false, per documents obtained by Reuters. Bill Pulte's accusation, the sole pretext Trump used to fire her from the Fed, was that she claimed two homes as primary residence. These docs show she did not.

The defining feature of U.S. democracy has been the unwillingness to hold white conservatives to the rule of law. Time & again, when democratic systems seemed to threaten their power, white conservatives sabotaged existing systems. That dynamic makes democracy impossible.

Reminder: It does not matter if Lisa Cook filled out a form wrong or if the raid finds some document in a file folder in John Bolton's house. These actions are wrong no matter what because they selectively target opponents of the government. The rule of law is under attack.
