Days after covering a protest last week, I realized I had been shot with a new so-called "less-lethal" munition that the LAPD is using more commonly at protests: the FN303. This week, Chief McDonnell said that officers used the FN303 because a judge banned the LAPD from using 40mm launchers.

and that's my voice off to the side of the camera, having to (again) quote the penal code to LAPD. This keeps happening: getting threatened with arrest; officers claiming that they don't have to comply with the law for some reason. @shoton35mm.bsky.social and I were clearly displaying press badges.

The reporter here knows this, but reporter in LA and California in general *are* exempt from dispersal orders. But LA cops routinely lie and say they aren't. They routinely beat and arrest reporters. So much so that there's a court injunction against it -- and LA city is fighting the injunction.

1/31: Narrowly avoided being arrested when LAPD officers kettled a small group of protesters, legal observers, and press. I ID'd myself as a journalist & tried to leave but an officer claimed I wasn't exempt from dispersal orders & said I would be detained. Luckily another officer let me leave.

@shoton35mm.bsky.social is one of the best journalists in L.A. and has been covering protests for months. He also has been repeatedly attacked by feds and local cops, despite clearly identifying himself as press and cops knowing who he is.

Last night, at least one federal agent shot me multiple times w/ pepper balls in my leg after they dispersed hundreds of protesters away from the MDC driveway on Alameda Street in DTLA. I was covering the protest for @lataco.bsky.social. This is the 2nd time I've been shot by the feds since June.

Confirmed via @shoton35mm.bsky.social who is busy reporting in the scene but DHS agents in riot gear have tear gassed protesters at the loading dock at the MDC

On Tuesday December 2, the Los Angeles City Council shut down a proposal that would have restricted the LAPD’s use of tear gas and 40 millimeter foam rounds against protestors and people in Los Angeles. @shoton35mm.bsky.social shares more details on the falied proposal.

Update: Mayor Bass' office finally responded to my Nov. 12 records request and acknowledged they have a recording of the town hall meeting (duh! it was clearly being recorded). They expect to send me the recording by December 18, just in time for the holidays 🙄

Bass as been awful on CPRA requests. A few months ago I filed CPRAs to Bass, LADOT, and Raman over a letter that Forest Lawn stated it had sent them. Bass and LADOT: we have no record of this. CD4: here's the letter (addressed to Bass, cc-ed to LADOT GM)

On Nov. 12 I filed a public records request for a recording of a town hall that Mayor Karen Bass hosted. I followed up multiple times but haven't received a response. This follows a familiar pattern of the mayor's office flat out ignoring (some) reporters and violating the CA Public Records Act.
