It has been a bracing moment for American federalism, with both unprecedented efforts to extend executive control over state and local govts, novel forms of subnational resistance. Where is federalism going? Paul Nolette and I have edited a new issue of Publius on that question. Short thread:

1) pay doctors a living wage but not so much their class interest is more aligned with the elite than the working class 2) nationalize the hospitals and open more; reopen hospitals that have closed due to our current privatized system (the actual culprit) 3) doctors can’t opt out if they want to

People are angry, and that anger is real. But MAHA redirects it away from the structural forces that create this crisis towards conspiracy and scapegoating.

On the surface, MAHA sounds like it’s about healing, about fixing a broken system. Its appeal is rooted in a widespread, deeply felt experience of abandonment by our health care system—a system that feels extractive, cruel, expensive and overall indifferent to everyday suffering.

Beyond the pale. Medicare and Medicaid pay for such a large % of care in the US that hospitals will be forced to comply with a youth trans care ban or close. The same mechanism the government used in the 1960s to desegregate hospitals but this time to retrench civil rights instead of advance them

6 years ago, a federal ban on gender-affirming care for young people was absent from the national Dem agenda, seemed unlikely to almost everyone who isn’t trans. 6 years ago, Marjorie Taylor Greene was a QAnon crank with a crossfit gym. Yesterday her ban passed out of the House with three Dem votes.

The next 12 months are going to be marked by extreme economic crisis and political instability. We need to put forward visions of a better world and make them as material and reproducible as possible, because we are about to enter an period of massive social rearrangement and experimentation

all the articles you read about this will say it "would charge doctors" but there is nothing in the bill limiting the felony crime to medical providers. you could write "would charge parents" and be just as correct. news outlets downplay it because news outlets are transphobic.

None of these laws passed a single state legislature until five years ago, and now:
