This was a discovery for me too this year! So good! Great Oscar-nominated performance by Fredric March, fantastic cinematography and effects (for the time of course)!

GODZILLA (1954) and THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN (1957) would make a really interesting double feature showcasing the mounting fears of the first decade after the nuclear Pandora’s Box was opened. Makes lizards big and men tiny!

Just watched A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE, the new Kathryn Bigelow movie, and am very conflicted. On the one hand, it’s well made, well scored, highly entertaining filmmaking. On the other, it’s clearly trying to say something, but the clear analog for this movie is Sidney Lumet’s FAIL SAFE (1964), 1/x

I have to say I’m not really interested in most J-Horror remakes from the 2000s, but currently watching The Ring remake, and it really does feel like a J-Horror Lite (coloring, etc.), which is not nothing (distinct Fincher vibes too) 📽️

what folks get wrong about lynch is they think he was trying to expose nice, normal communities as hotbeds of darkness and violence, but that's not it. he tried to figure out how nice, normal communities can co-exist alongside hotbeds of darkness and violence. I think it genuinely mystified him.

A History Of Violence (2005)

Ummm, Time just named us one of “The 100 Best Podcasts of All Time” alongside such pioneers as Serial, WTF, and something called “Fighting in the War Room”… We’re honored!

Rewatching Blood Simple and Miller’s Crossing, plus wanting to rewatch some other similar movies (most I own) have led me down a trail of 90s crime movies, which will culminate (current plan) in a rewatch of Jackie Brown and Lost Highway, two 1997 favorites! 📽️

Now watching Red Rock West (1993), nice little Western neo-noir, and it’s got the distinction of having three David Lynch stars from 1986-1990 in the same movie (Dennis Hopper from Blue Velvet, Lara Flynn Boyle from Twin Peaks, and Nic Cage from Wild at Heart) 📽️

The Miller’s Crossing score is CRAZY good, the main theme is breathtaking! The Coens and Carter Burwell just putting out bangers!

Have movies always been this good or do I just own a subwoofer now? I may never know

Now watching Miller’s Crossing (1990), and whom do I see? Speaking of Lynch/Coen connections (JE Freeman in both Wild At Heart and MC). Also have Frank Collison in WAH and O Brother Where Art Thou?📽️

Last thought, on Lynch and the Coens: I first fell for the Coens’ dark humor, and the brutal honesty about the ridiculousness of humans, but it often stops there. Lynch has much of that, even more brutal and surreal! But also was somehow able to find something hopeful to say that didn’t feel cheap 📽️

Holy cow, Laura Dern’s retelling of her dream in the middle of Blue Velvet, possibly one of the best speeches in movies, so beautiful, so honest and yet hopeful, enhanced by the oft disturbing elements surrounding it on both sides. I had to rewatch it twice! 📽️

A glimpse into my mind: my favorite movie pod is covering the Coens and just did Raising Arizona (w/ Nic Cage), and are doing Barton Fink in two weeks, so I thought “Barton Fink won the Palme d’Or, and the year before Wild at Heart (1990) won, feat. Nic Cage, I should rewatch that!” 1/3
