I’m going to make this as clear as I can—this World Cup Granville Street transformation HAS to lead to at least seasonal if not permanent pedestrianization. NOT JUST REMOVING VEHICLES. Joyous, magnetic place-making! Enough timidness. We’re the smartest city that’s still being dumb about ped-streets.

Let me get this straight: Canada ‘chastised’ Israel for raping and torturing our citizens… by reiterating Israel’s “right to self-defence”? You truly can’t make this shit up.

Drop the names of any Canadian companies you’ve seen working with ICE in the comments. I’m aware of Gardaworld, Roshel, Hootsuite. Would love to gather any and all other names.

I am more worried about war in Minnesota than in Greenland or Canada. The US is hours or days away from civil war. This might sound extreme, but if Walz has the Minn National Guard blocking ICE ops, the usual response of the fed govt to governors using NG against feds is to call out the army. 1/

Yukon climate factoid: the temperature at Dawson remained below -15C from December 5 through January 15, and all but three of those days had high temperatures below -20C. Also, 25 days with lows in the 40s below with a low of -49.1C on Jan 4th.

I love a good weather streak but I'm happy that this one is coming to an end. Now I can take out the battery from the car, warm it up, and then hope the car will start again! And also for the pipe to my washing machine and bathroom sink to thaw 🙃

Casual reminder that the myth of “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps” is a cruel hoax designed to convince poor people from all walks of life that the injustices they face are a result of their own actions, rather than an oppressive system rigged against them.

I actually thought I had shared this on here and I hadn't. But if you want to look at why Tehran has to move it's climate change, yes, but it's genuinely fascinating as a failure of long term planning/ not understanding water supplies.

Here’s something that’s really important for everyone to understand. If we design our cities just for cars, they fail everyone, including drivers. If we design our cities with many great CHOICES in how to get around, they work better for everyone, including drivers. Spread the word.

Pierre Poilievre says he wants to “restore merit.” He needed to be handed arguably the safest, most impossible to lose conservative seat in all of Canada after losing his own seat. Seems like the opposite of merit.

Notably, 12,000 year old landforms are not offset across the fault, which implies that it may be at a relatively late stage of an interseismic period, having accrued a slip deficit of ~6 m. From this, we estimate that ruptures of at least magnitude 7.5 are possible in the future.

The paper I've been waiting for! Trying to find seismic hazard information for this region has been challenging at best, and I've been unsuccessful in finding something that describes risk. Seems worth it now to continue with earthquake insurance on the house (even if it is 20% of my premium).
