Many areas are seeing record snowfall this winter, thanks to global warming--or rather, global weirding! How so? It hasn't been cold enough for lakes other than Erie to completely ice over yet. As cold air sweeps across them, it's picking up moisture and dumping massive snowfall on the other side.

So many in my area complaining that their roads "aren't clear" and I'm confused about the expectation. A plow doesn't get every molecule of snow up. And if it stays way below freezing, nothing left behind will melt. Do they expect pristine asphalt? Not trying to dunk on them, I'm just so confused.

Data wrangling (extremely common in geochem!) and taste-testing (extremely uncommon in geochem!) - students in Colgate Univ GEOL303: Geochemistry are comparing 12 different “sea” salts. Samples queued up for analysis on the ion chromatograph. Data soon!

An analytical bingo: powder the rocks, weigh the rocks, dissolve the rocks, dilute the rocks, then realize there are PRECISELY enough samples to completely fill a single sample tray. Similar life events: a chips-and-salsa coincidence, a shampoo-and-conditioner serendipity. #geology #geoscience ⚒️🌋

The sound of connecting to dial-up internet just emanated from a distant corner of the coworking space. All the millennials popped their heads up from their computers like a flock of prairie dogs being activated by a long-forgotten ancestral call.

Kiddo got a "diamond painting" kit so we gave it a try and... this skill set is hilariously reminiscent of picking mineral separates for melt inclusions/in situ geochemistry. Successful day of cooking adventures in the lab! Sample digestions (dissolving rocks in hot acid— definitely cooking!), working on the ICP-MS (plasma *definitely* cooks), and calibrating the ion chromatograph (okay “cooking” is a stretch for this one). #geology #geoscience ⚒️ 🌋
