Everyone is posting about my favorites today! Olivia Waite's Feminine Pursuits books are so freaking good. Loved the first one, but Hellion's Waltz might be even better. Swindles! Labor and socioeconomic intrigue! Music and musicians! And a sweet, steamy romance between two strong but flawed women.

Pop those egos like a fucking balloon. Deflate that shit. No more “big thinkers” and “thought leaders.” Throw them all in the trash.

This was such a fun book. I adore Viv so much. The entire cast of characters is so strong and well-drawn, the mystery is engaging and Emily does such a fantastic job immersing the reader in the setting. I really have to get to the other books in the series sometime soon.

Finished The West Passage by @vandroidhelsing.bsky.social today (audiobook; INCREDIBLE narration). OMG what a mind-bending journey. Gloriously weird, utterly original, deep world lore, subversively emotional AND it sticks the landing. I'm in awe.

Such a handy little book for learning and thinking about naming conventions. Where do they come from, why are they the way they are, and how can you adapt them to your own work to reflect and the develop the world and the culture of your story? And it's just fun to read. Highly recommended.

I finished Seasons of Glass and Iron, a short story collection by @amalelmohtar.com last night, and it was just what I needed right now. There's heartbreak, but also hope. There's weird, wondrous, luminous, mythic and more, and all of it fed my soul. Such a pleasure to experience.

I wrote to one of my favorite authors after she destroyed me (complimentary; I had to pull off the road at the end of the audiobook to cry happy tears without wrecking the car). I didn't get a response, but it didn't matter. It felt good writing it. I hope she felt good receiving it.

The Spare Man by Mary Robinette Kowal presents a disabled MC (with a service dog, IIRC) who’s pretty amazing. #weeknightwriters

In relation to the autistic-coded character I mentioned in Q3, the MC is very supportive and patient with him, while her mother is convinced he's mostly just making it up. Not surprisingly, that's a major source of tension, considering they all live together. #weeknightwriters

An important side character has traits consistent with severe autism (inflicted on him, rather than being born with it) and he's far from alone. Haven't written this part of the story yet (book 3!), but learning how to embrace and draw power from that will be a major plot point. #weeknightwriters
