Minnesota National Guard members have arrived at a federal building and were directed to distribute donuts, coffee, and hot chocolate to anti-ICE protesters. Guard members were issued reflective vests so they would not be mistaken for federal agents.

A month into my new job, my first real scoop. Exposing thousands of babies to “a significant risk” of hepatitis B “in a low-income country with limited health care resources” would be “wildly unethical and a disgraceful use of American taxpayer money,”

Shocked by the awful death of Rob Reiner. I spoke with him for over an hour last night. We talked about his work and his plans for the future. I always enjoyed his company. We met at his Dad's in 1975. Last thing he said to me was "See you next year.." Such a terrible end. Such a sweet man.

Hello new followers. I don’t post much. The thing I’ve done on the internet that I’m proudest of is interviewing a former USAID official about his work on PEPFAR.

I'm surprised how many people are quick to make a defense of violence in my replies. For them it's necessary, foreclosing on its use is a privilege. For me, non-violence is a powerful tool. It is the lesson of one of my heroes, Bayard Rustin. 1/

The best Memorial Day speech is only 271 words and wasn't delivered on Memorial Day, but on November 19, 1863. Read it carefully, it's the most important speech in American military history (and maybe all of American history).

A few years ago I visited the National Museum of African American History & Culture with my grandparents. When we stepped out of the building my grandmother kept repeating the words “I lived it. I lived it. I lived it.” She’s still here. That history is still in her bones. You can never erase that.

foreign aid to fight infectious diseases is a kind of enlightened self interest, since infectious diseases that go around come around. Aid for fighting AIDS, now suspended by Executive Order, is no exception.

Compared with any other major country, the United States has been extremely fortunate in its two immediate neighbors, Canada and Mexico. Now, incredibly, it is declaring economic war on both of them. This is a war no one can win, and from which tens of millions will lose. This is insanity.
