The Viking world was larger and more connected to Africa, Asia, and the Middle East than most people realize. When I first meet someone, I have to stop myself from blurting out three questions: 1. What’s your favorite Pokémon? 2. What’s your favorite period of history? 3. What’s your favorite dinosaur? I’m successful 33% of the time.

The fact that there’s never been a Sims-esque, life sim Pokémon game is a crime.

What natural detritus you tend to pick up off the ground says a lot about your literary preferences. Stick people are fantasy fanatics, rock folk are scifi nerds, flower pickers are romance readers, and dead leaf gazers are horror enthusiasts, obvs.

After writing a 24-page world bible, a third of an outline, and 3.3K words into a first draft, I suspect this project isn’t merely hyperfixation.

Adventures in first drafting: Think I’ll scrap the first graph of Ch2. I like the opening line, “Harren Windstrider rode through the haunted bog astride a demon,” but now I have to describe what that not-demon thing he’s riding actually is, and I fear wildebeest mounts get in the way of the story.

Just had a 72-hour worldbuilding brainhurricane hyperfixation. Now I have a brand new, fully built grimdark fantasy setting based loosely on Early Medieval Northern Europe. I wouldn’t call it original, and certainly not unique, but I’m having fun with it and my motivation has skyrocketed.
