A big part of progressive and liberal political thought, both, is the idea of working together for a common good, but if you want to reach the rurals, it has to be framed as an alliance against a common enemy. The right uses political demonization as a key tactic, and that's successful here.

Something that doesn't get discussed enough is the DEEPLY embedded combative-and-contrarian nature of greater Appalachia and how it can (probably) only be harnessed for good by positing any communal action as a fight, and a fight against a specific foe. There's precedent! The civil war, labor, etc.
