Tried my new SteamDeck today. Impressed by how easy it is to set up and run Windows executables via Proton. Of course, Live++ uses esoteric internal Win32 APIs that apparently don't work, so I can't hot-reload on the deck (yet).

Hot take: building your software for a certain OS should require *nothing* that isn't already there out of the box, and/or work with the most popular tools/IDEs. If I want to build your software for e.g. Windows, ideally it has .bat scripts and/or a VS .sln.

Always interesting how -- even after so many years -- there are still new things to be discovered that need to be taken into account to accommodate different companies' workflows.

The Live++ Releases page now offers an RSS feed, making it easier to keep track of updates. #cpp #gamedev

In the next update, it will be possible to hot-restart on an unhandled exception. This is incredibly useful in situations where code has been deoptimized and a few patches have been applied, especially in startup code, because this will automatically be injected upon restart.

I recently gave a talk + live demos about Live++ and its use cases. One of them included fixing bugs on the fly, and feedback I got mentioned that people didn't think about hot-reloading code while the exception handler was open. Naturally, there's now a hint at the bottom, since this is powerful!

I'm currently in the situation where I write about 20 lines of C++ code per day. Most of the time is spent thinking "How do I even test this?" and once I have an idea and implement a test, debugging jumps between "the test is wrong" and "the implementation is wrong".

Oh my dear. 1 second *per DLL*? So for UE5 built locally, we'd see a delay of roughly... 800 seconds?

100%. I'm working on something entirely new, looked at all the really hard problems first to gauge whether it can actually be done, and now there's a mountain of engineering work left, with most hard puzzles solved. The first 80% are much more enjoy able than the second 80% :).

For what I'm currently working on, there are some situations where it's impossible to allocate memory from code running in certain C++ scopes, which is a fun exercise. Needing to keep track of an unbounded number of objects during this brings back global/intrusive linked lists.
